Not every home is ready for a heat pump, and not every homeowner should switch today. Our advice starts with your house and how you use your heating: its size, age and insulation, how warm you like it, and what you pay for fuel now. From there we compare a heat pump with keeping gas, oil or LPG, including what running costs could look like and what work would be needed first. A heat pump usually suits a home with reasonable insulation, space for an outdoor unit and room for a hot-water cylinder. It can be a poor fit for a draughty house that has not been insulated, or where larger radiators cannot be fitted, and we will say so. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant comes into the conversation too, as it makes a big difference to the upfront cost. It depends on your electricity tariff, how well the system is designed and how well the house holds heat. We give you a realistic comparison for your home rather than a headline figure.
When is a heat pump not the right choice?
If the house loses heat quickly and insulation is not an option, or there is nowhere suitable for the outdoor unit, another option may suit you better for now.
Do I need to insulate first?
Good loft and wall insulation helps any heating system and lets a smaller heat pump do the job. We tell you which improvements matter most for your house.
